Arturo’s Osteria and Pizzeria

Standard

While visiting my family in NJ, I tried to get my parents to go to Arturo’s everyday.  Somehow we didn’t manage to get there until our last day, but it was well worth the wait.  I had only been there once before but it left a lasting impression!

Arturo’s is a small restaurant with only about 10 tables and a brick oven you can see from any spot.  They pride themselves on being an eatery that uses as much local produce, dairy, and meats in their cooking.  The end result is food that uses minimal ingredients but ones with exceptional flavor.

For me, these kinds of restaurants are the hardest for me to make decisions at.  I always try to choose something off the special menu, but here ALL their specials sounded fabulous.  It was a toss-up between a combination or soup, sandwich, and/or salad.

The salad was light and refreshing, perfect for a 60 degree winter NJ day!  Butter lettuce, Toma cheese, and crunchy apples tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette.  The lettuce was so tender and soft and the cheese was semi-soft cow cut into thin strips.

The sandwich was unbelievable served on their homemade leavened bread.  It was topped with fresh tangy goat cheese, peppery mixed greens, and thinly sliced Coppa.  The sandwich had all the right elements-smooth, creamy, chewy, crunchy, tangy, salty!  I might have to start making sandwiches like these at home!
